Parquet Flooring Facts

Dating back to the mid to late 1600’s and popularly linked with Versailles and the Grand Trianon, Parquet is a geometric mosaic of wood pieces used as a decorative effect in wood flooring. The word Parquet derives from the Old French word “parchet”, literally meaning a small enclosed space.

Wood pieces in contrasting in colours and grains, such as oak, cherry, pine, lime, walnut, and maple are sometimes used. In some very expensive floors, richly coloured mahogany and sometimes tropical hardwoods can be used.

Parquet floors are often found in hallways and bedrooms but they are becoming more popular in kitchens too. They are generally considered superior to regular floor tiles because of their natural appearance and warmer feel underfoot.

Parquet floors are usually long lasting if maintained correctly. If a single block becomes unstuck, it can be re-glued. Fully restoring a parquet flooring is not for the feint-hearted and is a job that is best left to a professional restorer.  Historically, parquet floors were laid with hot bitumen but these days parquet flooring is installed using a specialist adhesive which delivers a strong, long-lasting result.

Properly installed and cared for parquet floors are not only pleasing to the eye, but they are also easy to clean. Like most wood floors, parquet flooring should be regularly vacuumed and cleaned with a damp, but not wet mop.

If you need to perform a deep clean, it is best to use a specialist wood flooring detergent solution. Your parquet floor supplier should be able to advise the best product to use.
